RENOWNED POET AND NOVELIST SANKHA SUBHRA DEVBARMAN VOICES CONCERN OVER THE TRAGIC TRIPURA FLOODS

Sankha Subhra Devbarman ,an eminent poet and novelist of North East India, in an interview with Anshul Sharma (photo-journalist) expressed grief for the recent devastating flood in Tripura. Devbarman who himself from Tripura urged the authorities and governing bodies to get on grips with the present natural calamity in Tripura as a national catastrophe. It is to be mentioned that due to massive floods, the death toll has risen upto 24 in Tripura while some are severely injured and others are still missing. The estimated the overall loss to be around Rs 5,000 crore across the state.

As an immediate measure, the Central Government has released a multi-crore package to carry out rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations in the flood-hit regions.Relief camps have been opened since August 19 to accommodate roughly 1.28 lakh people affected by the floods. They are being provided food, drinking water, medical help etc,.

Preliminary reports suggest extensive damages to physical infrastructure like roads, power, buildings, agricultural crops, houses, fishery, ponds, livestock etc. Meanwhile, rescue operations are continuing in Gomati and South Tripura districts. As of now, six teams of the National Disaster Response Force and six of the State Disaster Response Force are conducting rescue operations.

Helicopters have conducted sorties for relief operations in marooned vulnerable locations. Moreover, food packets have been dispatched for distribution.
